Shopping around
General March 30th, 2006I have a bit of a reputation for shopping around for the best deal and not just going with what I find first. This comes from advice given to me by my Dad, which I didn’t take much notice of as a kid but it has certainly stuck with me and saved a fair bit!
The time of year has come for the Micra to have it’s MOT done and to be taxed and insured. As it’s been home serviced for a couple of years now and it’s coming up to it’s fifth birthday, I decided it needed to go for a full blown service. All I had to do was get some quotes.
Yesterday I did some phoning around to get some quotes for the service and MOT. I started with the local Dixon Nissan in Huddersfield who quoted me for a major manufacturer service (P3 service). It was a little higher than I’d expected but they were very helpful and friendly.
Next I tried Nationwide Autocentres next to the Halfords on Bradford Road. They offered me their own full service package, but I was smitten for the manufacturer approved full service.
I then tried two other local Nissan dealers, Dixon Nissan in Halifax and Dixon Nissan in Birstall. I was expecting that the price quoted would be the same as at the Huddersfield dealer as they were all Dixon Group dealerships. Birstall quoted me £25 less and Halifax an amazing £98 less than my original quote with Huddersfield. All of the dealers offered a collect and return service so the extra distance wouldn’t be a problem, and they could all do the work within a week.
I had a preference for the Huddersfield garage for some reason, although Birstall were also very helpful and friendly, and so I phoned them back to see if they could match the cheapest price. A quick word with the manager resulted in a yes! So it’s now booked in with a huge saving of £98.
The moral of the story is that however unlikely you think it may be to find a better deal, there will nearly always be one and it probably won’t take much searching to find it.
